While Dean Transportation drivers are the skilled navigators, bus attendants play an equally crucial role, providing care, support and a sense of security to those on board. This was recognized earlier this year when a parent nominated Kathy Wildeboer, a dedicated Dean bus attendant in Ottawa County for more than 10 years, for a prestigious Bev Drake Essential Service Award presented by West Michigan Works!.
The Bev Drake Essential Service Awards were created to recognize individuals in west Michigan whose daily work is essential to the community’s well-being — those who go above and beyond, deliver superior service, and make a real difference in the lives of others. Named after the late Bev Drake, a passionate community advocate and former CEO of West Michigan Works!, the awards highlight the unsung heroes who often operate on the front lines or behind the scenes.
Wildeboer’s nomination and subsequent win are a powerful testament to the impact she has on the lives of the students and families she works with in Ottawa County.
“Working with kids with disabilities takes a special person — and that’s exactly what Kathy is, a very special person,” said Joey Brown, transportation director. “She’s like their grandmother and has all the empathy and compassion for those children. She takes them into her care 100% on that vehicle.”
For Wildeboer, her role is more than just a job.
“I’m an attendant, and it’s up to me to get the students into their seats and secured and to be looking for anything medical that may happen, just keeping everybody safe and calm and happy,” she said. “I feel honored, but I feel like ‘I’m just doing my job.’ I love these kids, and I want what’s best for them.”
The depth of Wildeboer’s impact is perhaps best captured in the heartfelt parent recommendation that led to her award: “Kathy isn’t just filling a job position as a bus attendant; she is the reason I feel safe putting my nonverbal daughter on the bus every day to school.”
In a world where consistency is vital, especially for children with disabilities, Wildeboer “always shows up to care for her every day to get to and from school.” Her dedication extends beyond the basics, as she takes the time to truly know each child, their families and individual needs.
“Her kids are so near and dear to her heart. When they are sick … Kathy worries about them, checks in and stays informed with all the families. She truly cares more than any employee is required to. They are a piece of her heart.”
