Driven by Passion: Jeff Cousins, Trailways ‘Driver of the Year’ Shares His Journey

In the heart of Lansing, Michigan, Jeff Cousins’ extraordinary journey begins to take shape. After 36 fulfilling and rewarding years at UPS, Jeff bid farewell to the delivery routes in December 2014. However, the call for a new adventure on the open road enticed him back to the workforce in January 2016. This decision marked the beginning of an eight-year (and counting) second home at Dean Trailways, a place where Jeff’s commitment to people and his genuine, kind-hearted nature found a perfect match.

Jeff’s journey is not just about miles traveled but about the deep connections forged with every passenger, making every journey a unique and cherished experience and memory. His affinity for connecting with passengers on their adventures and journeys has become a hallmark of his incredible career — a trait that now shines even brighter.

It is with immense pride and joy that Dean shares the news of Jeff Cousins being named Trailways “2023 Part-Time Driver of the Year.” This prestigious award, bestowed annually to a driver within the nationally recognized Trailways Transportation network, recognizes individuals who exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and safety. The Trailways network is comprised of independent companies, collectively serving millions of passengers across North America each year. Jeff’s receipt of this award not only highlights his exceptional driving skills but also honors his unwavering dedication and kindness to others.

People: The Heart of the Journey

In Jeff’s narrative, people are the notes that compose a melodic journey — from his arrival at Dean to the present, where the resonance of human connection continues to define his commitment to and passion for his work. Now, as he receives the Trailways “Part-Time Driver of the Year” award, his dedication to others is not just acknowledged but celebrated. Jeff, reflecting on the challenge of singling out specific moments, holds dear his experiences with the MSU Jazz Club. Their ability to seamlessly integrate him into their day, whether touring high schools or delivering grand performances, leaves a lasting impression. Describing the organization as “so fun and full of life,” Jeff paints a vivid picture of the infectious spirit of the ensemble that becomes the heartbeat of his voyages. A mutual feeling that is echoed by MSU Jazz Director Monzola Whitaker, who not only affirms Jeff’s exceptional professionalism but goes on to declare that he “far exceeds all standards.”

A Humbling Triumph

Upon receiving the news from Sarah Ring, General Manager of Dean Trailways, that Jeff had been nominated and selected as the winner of the Trailways “Part-Time Driver of the Year” award, he was left stunned and overwhelmed with emotion — a moment he shared with his wife, Sue. Tears welled up as he read heartfelt recommendation letters from a diverse array of passengers, organizations and colleagues. For Jeff, the idea of such recognition had never crossed his mind. The acknowledgment, not just from passengers and colleagues, but also from his employer, brought a profound sense of honor and empowerment. In this moment, Jeff’s work crystallized in purpose and impact, resonating not only within himself but profoundly touching those around him.
