Dean Driver Announced as National 2025 School Bus Driver Hero: Ms. Jackie’s Legacy of Care

Dean Transportation is honored to announce that one of our own, Jackie Wilkerson Brown, has been selected as the recipient of School Bus Fleet’s inaugural 2025 School Bus Driver Hero Award.

Sponsored by AngelTrax, this brand-new honor was created to celebrate exceptional drivers who go above and beyond to keep students safe and make a meaningful difference in their communities through everyday heroic actions.

“Jackie Wilkerson Brown receiving the inaugural School Bus Driver Hero Award is the highest possible honor, but for those who work alongside her, it’s simply a confirmation of the extraordinary person she is,” said Patrick Dean, president of Dean Transportation. “Jackie embodies Dean’s ‘people helping people’ philosophy every single day, going far beyond driving a route to become a true advocate and community connector. Her dedication to the well-being and safety of her students sets a powerful standard for our entire industry, and we could not be prouder to have her as part of the Dean family.”

A Journey Rooted in Dedication
Brown began her training as a licensed school bus driver for the Lansing School District in 2004 and officially joined Dean Transportation in 2014. Her commitment continues to grow; since 2016, she has also driven routes for Dean Trailways and became a recruitment ambassador for the company in 2023.

Her reaction to the news was one of pure gratitude.

“I was absolutely thrilled, grateful and humbled [to receive the award],” Brown shared. “To learn that someone had nominated me for this award and the acknowledgment of my tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to my students as a bus driver, well, I’ve been envisioning an opportunity like this.”

The Heart of a Community Connector
Lovingly known as “Ms. Jackie,” Brown is a reliable and caring figure who continually fosters strong connections and ensures student safety. Her infectious smile and remarkable ability to deescalate tense situations have earned her the deep respect and affection of the Lansing School District.

Brown has earned the trust of students, teachers, administrators and parents through her capacity for kindness and high emotional intelligence. Parents rely on her for safe, reliable transportation while students trust her to listen and provide encouragement, viewing her as someone who genuinely cares about their well-being and success. Brown excels at deescalating challenging situations with calmness and empathy, maintaining control of her bus while fostering positive rapport with students of all ages.

Her service goes far beyond the route:

  • Brown often attends her students’ athletic events, graduations and other major milestones, demonstrating her genuine connection to their lives.
  • She quietly notices when students are in need and coordinates donations of clothes, coats and shoes, ensuring they receive help without public attention.
  • She connects parents facing tough times with local organizations and agencies to address basic needs, truly acting as a community resource liaison.
  • Brown even once sat in a hospital waiting room during a student’s emergency, illustrating the depth of her care for the families she serves.

This tireless dedication is why a nominator described her as a “cornerstone of our school transportation program” whose “faithful service has contributed immeasurably to the success of our transportation program and the well-being of our entire school community.”

Brown’s philosophy is simple yet powerful.

“Being a bus driver offers a sense of fulfillment and purpose through making transformative differences in children’s lives and being a positive influence,” she said.
